Muscle & Fitness: What made you want to compete?
Justine Munro: The personal trainer I first started working with recommended that I do a show. I immediately said, “No way.” At the time, I couldn’t imagine it. I had never even worn a bikini—I wore T-shirts and shorts. I was a tomboy. But after a few months, I started to roll it over in my mind and decided it was a chance to try something really different. What did I have to lose?

What has it taught you about yourself?
It’s taught me never to assume. I thought that all of this—the competing, the modeling—would never be for me, but I’m very much at home with it. If I’d gone with my original instinct to shy away from it, I wouldn’t have had these great experiences.

What are your hobbies outside of fitness?
I like hanging out with my family. I like movies. I can go for some Xbox—some Grand Theft Auto or Call of Duty. I’m a homebody. I like to go hiking, but I don’t do the nightlife thing—I don’t like clubs and bars. I haven’t had a drink since I started competing in 2009, and I don’t like being around it. I can’t stand drunk people; they really turn me off.

What’s a piece of advice you try to live by?
“Say what you mean, and mean what you say.” We’re all going to make mistakes. No one is perfect. But I think that stating your intentions and doing everything you can to live up to those intentions makes you a complete person. In fitness, that means writing out your goal and then systematically pursuing it with a program. In life, I think it means being the best friend you can be—you can never be too generous, because what you give out, you always get back.
