Cristiano Ronaldo is one of the most well-known athletes in the world—both for his remarkable soccer skills and his disarming good looks—but if you check out the new statue honoring him at the Madeira Islands Airport, you may not recognize it as Ronaldo. Namely because it doesn’t look a thing like Ronaldo.

The hair is pretty good, though.

The statue was unveiled at the airport, which was re-named Aeroporto Cristiano Ronaldo, in honor of the soccer superstar.

The Real Madrid forward took it all in stride, but the rest of the world wasn’t so cool…or collected.

The sculptor of the statue took some heat for the design, as you’d expect, but he defended his work.

“It is impossible to please the Greeks and Trojans. Neither did Jesus please everyone,” Emanuel Santos said to the BBC. “I was with his brother at Cristiano’s museum in Madeira and from the messages he sent, I could tell that he liked what he saw.”

Photos of the statue sent the Internet into a tizzy, and boy did they have some great jokes commenting on the, ahem, slightly mangled look of the sculpture.
