For those expecting a break from 2016’s bizarre circus of an election during the vice presidential debate last night, you didn’t get one. In fact, the tit-for-tat, battle of the bulges held at Longwood University in Farmville, Virginia proved to be much more vicious than expected.
Senator Tim Kaine of Virginia was quick to attack Donald Trump, hurling his offensive lines out straight from the start. During his answer to one of the opening questions about Clinton’s track record with trustworthiness, the senator took the opportunity to remind viewers of Trump’s sexist and racist perspective instead.
When it came to answering the highly anticipated question of Trump’s mysterious tax returns, Mike Pence was not prepared. The Governor of Indiana dodged the question, choosing to focus (rather incoherently) on Trump’s expert entrepreneurial skills in his “gaming” of the tax code, The New Republic reports.
From that point on, it only got more hostile, with Pence accusing the Clinton campaign of launching an “avalanche of insults” at Trump over claims that the Republican candidate was linked to Vladimir Putin.
Things really got crazy when Trump decided to weigh in on the debate via Twitter, comparing Kaine to a Batman villain. “@Jnelson52722: @realDonaldTrump @Susiesentinel Kaine looks like an evil crook out of the Batman movies,” he wrote. Of course, viewers were too busy trying to decipher what was actually being said between the non-stop interruptions.
One of the more bizarre moments came when Mike Pence became riled up by Kaine’s repeated references to Trump’s comments on Mexican immigrants, seething, “Senator, you’ve whipped out that Mexican thing again.”
And finally, Kaine fit in a noteworthy zinger on Trump’s anti-terrorism strategies, joking, “Donald Trump can’t start a Twitter war with Miss Universe without shooting himself in the foot.” Ouch!
