The surfing world is abuzz with word that big wave surfer Garrett McNamara may have beat his own mark on Monday in Portugal. The Massachusetts native, who now lives in Hawaii, was surfing in Nazarre with Andrew Cotton and Alastair Mennie and is the holder of the current official record for riding the biggest wave (90ft), which he set in 2011.
“Everything was perfect, the weather, the waves,” said Mennie, according to the Guardian. “Cotty and I surfed two big waves of about 60ft and then, when Garrett was ready came a canyon wave of over 90ft. The jet ski was the best place to see him riding the biggest wave I’ve ever seen. It was amazing. Most people would be scared but Garrett was controlling everything in the critical part of the wave. It was an inspiring ride by an inspiring surfer.”
As we blog, nothing has been confirmed, but McNamara took to Twitter to describe the day’s surfing in glowing terms. “Thank you for all your support. It means the world to me. Today was an awesome day and so fun to be out there,” he tweeted.
