The final trailer for Kong: Skull Island has hit the internet, and judging by the intense action, one might as well be called Kong: Apocalypse Now.
Director Jordan Vogt-Roberts hasn’t been shy about saying his film is inspired by Apocalypse Now, the 1970’s epic war film about Vietnam. This trailer proves it: Both films take place during the same time period, and the styled shots in Kong—hazy sun, helicopters making their way through the jungle, the bombastic music—all take cues from Francis Ford Coppola’s classic.
“Let me list the ways you’re gonna die,” Tom Hiddleston’s character says as danger looms. “Rain, heat, disease-carrying flies—and we haven’t started on the things that want to eat you alive.”
The movie follows Tom Hiddleston’s character, Vietnam veteran James Conrad, as he’s brought in to help lead an expedition into the uncharted island. Brie Larson’s war photographer Mason Weaver is along for the ride along with a military crew that includes Samuel L. Jackson, John Goodman, Corey Hawkins, and Toby Kebbell.
Kong is the second film in what Legendary Studios and Warner Bros. is billing as their “MonsterVerse” of movies taking place in the same shared universe. This film ties into 2014’s Godzilla with the inclusion of the secretive organization Monarch, and will continue with Godzilla: King of the Monsters (slated for March 22, 2019) and Godzilla vs. Kong (slated for May 29, 2020).
Kong: Skull Island, directed by Jordan Vogt-Roberts and starring Hiddleston, Larson, Jackson, Goodman, Shea Whigham, John C. Reilly, Jing Tian, and Tom Wilkinson, will be released on March 10, 2017.
