Dumbbell Chop

The dumbbell chop is a full body rotational exercise that strengthens the core with an emphasis on the lower abdominals and obliques. This movement will also improve rotational power through the hips and lower back.

Instructions

  1. 940_A
Standing in a shoulder-width stance, hold a dumbbell with both hands above one shoulder with your arms completely straight. Maintain a tight torso. This is your starting position.
  2. Dumbbell Chop
Rotate your torso while bringing the dumbbell down toward the opposite hip and past the thigh. Do not round your lower back. Reverse the movement back up to starting position.

Trainer’s Tips

  • Avoid moving the weight with the arms instead of the core. Make sure to rotate at the hips and core not the shoulders.
  • Avoid hyperextending the lower back. Keep the lower back neutral throughout the entire movement.
