You would imagine that after becoming the first person to swim from Cuba to Florida without a shark cage, Diane Nyad would put her feet up for a well-deserved break. But that is not how this 64-year-old lady rolls.

She was back in the water for another incredible endurance feat. This time, it wasn’t about achieving personal goals of fulfilling lifelong ambitions; it was about helping others in need of a good spot, as we would say at Muscle & Fitness.

As we approach the one-year anniversary of Hurricane Sandy, there are still many who are struggling from its devastating aftermath. Nyad decided to act, and she did a 48-hour continuous “Swim for Relief” fundraiser for AmeriCares in Herald Square in the heart of New York City.

Our friends at New York Health & Racquet Club got involved by donating lifeguards for the event, supplying a swim team to make sure she had company in the pool, and donating $10,000 to the cause.

“For those of you who have suffered, let us stand up for you and tell you that we have not forgotten you,” said Nyad of the effort.

We would like to salute this amazing woman for her Herculean effort in the water and give a tip of the hat to New York Health & Racquet Club for helping out. To donate to the effort, visit crowdrise.com/nyhrc-sfr.
