In a somewhat unexpected turn of events, it looks as if South Carolina Super-Heavyweight Cedric McMillan could be in line for overall Nationals honors here in Hollywood, Florida.
There’s very little about McMillan’s physique to criticize, and while he may not draw the eye when standing relaxed, he comes alive when posing. Based on the positioning of the judges’ callouts, he’s certainly in the running for top honors in the SH class, along with big Robert Burneika.
Burneika is the thickest man of the 187 competing in this evening’s prejudging and is improved over his USA’s look this past July. Standing next to the taller and more fluid McMillan, the power-packed Burneika poses an apples/oranges choice for the judges.
In the Heavyweight class, there seems to be a heated duel going on between Jacksonville’s Lee Banks and Browns Mills, NJ’s Jeff Long. Long presents greater thigh mass and overall thickness while Banks brought razor sharpness and terrific shape to bear on this occasion. We’ll go out on a limb and guesstimate that the veteran Banks will finally get his due, but it’s a close call either way.
In the Light Heavies, New Kensington’s Seth Feroce may become an upset winner tomorrow night. Bringing 196 pounds of sharp detail, excellent balance and good shape to the stage, he looks to be ahead of pre-contest favorites Tamer El Guindy, Al Auguste and Brandon Ray
Nathan DeTracy looks to be the clear winner of his 39-man strong class. Like McMillan, there’s little in the DeTracy physique that warrants criticism. Ronald Torres, Todd Scott and Jason Joseph are all in the running for high placings as well.
Shavis Higa was a favorite to win the Welterweight class going into this evening’s prejudging, but his conditioning isn’t quite up to par on this occasion, leaving the door open for Victor DelCampo, who is cut and dry and who has a terrific back. Dr. Victor Prisk and veteran Jesse Sabater also made the first callout of the class.
Top Lightweights include Luis Santiago, Joe Vu, Bill Lawrence, Travis Rogers, Willis Francois and Kelly Pettiford. In the Bantams, Chris Darby,Martin Burger, Bleu Taylor and Enrique Ortiz look to be in the running for the top spot.
