The Expendables are the ultimate throwback to a time when not every Hollywood action movie was a festival of CGI superhero battles and digitally-enhanced muscles and explosions. It’s fitting then, that as Expendables 2 hits theaters this weekend, that the licensed videogame of the same name is a throwback in its own right. Ubisoft’s Expendables 2 is a simple, top-down action game (think Smash TV, Total Carnage, or Akari Warriors) that serves as a prequel story to the movie. You play as one of the film’s four main characters: Barney Ross (Sylvester Stallone), Hale Caesar (Terry Crews), Gunnar Jensen (Dolph Lundgren), or Yin Yang (Jet Li) either cooperatively online or alone with computer-guided teammates.

The price tag is throwback, too. It’s currently available via download on Playstation Network for just $15 (it’ll hit XBox Live and PC digital download for the same price on August 17), and despite the bargain, delivers as many hours of mindless fun as any AAA shooter. If you long for the days of straight-up, hard-nosed action movies—and games—then this is straight up your alley.
