Matt Gehlbach’s story is one that could be a source of inspiration for many in and out of the fitness community. A young California kid uses sports and fitness as a way to improve himself, works to become a firefighter, struggles through adversity and the loss of his job, works his way back up to join a bigger department, then takes a leap of faith into entrepreneurship that so far has been paying off. When asked what advice he would offer for someone in a similar starting position, his answer was with a question of his own.
“You’ll never know until you try, right?”

Gehlbech got into sports thanks to his grandfather. Growing up in the Bay Area, they were fans of the 49ers and Giants. Young Matt played football but was more passionate about baseball. He never pursued a pro career but did get into fitness and weight training as he grew up. He enjoyed training but struggled to find the right nutrition approach for him and his goals.
“I tried finding something that I could be consistent with, but it was just really, really difficult. So, I kept trying to train hard, do different things. I guess you could say fad diets.”
He discovered club rugby while in college but an old knee injury from his baseball days struck again, and Gehlbech decided to move on after that. It was then he pursued a career as a firefighter. It was while he was training to become an EMT and firefighter that he realized his health and wellness mattered more than ever.
Gehlbech said, “It wasn’t until I got to the fire service where I realized that my health is my responsibility. And no one is coming to save me.”
Gehlbech was a fan of many of the major websites of that era and even read magazines like Muscle & Fitness to soak in all the knowledge he could about building muscle. His efforts were impressive enough that a friend talked him into entering a bodybuilding contest. The suggestion coming from someone who saw something he didn’t see himself served as the catalyst to follow through.
“I hired a coach, signed up for a show, and just started prepping. And I won, what was it, three out of four classes after that.”
Gehlbech went on to work for an ambulance service in Austin, Texas, but life took a sudden turn when his father suddenly passed away and he decided to return home. As difficult as that was to process, Gehlbech did eventually join a fire department, then moved on to a bigger one. However, he admits not being in his best shape at that time, which would cost him his opportunity. They let him go during his 16th week of the 18-week academy. Looking back, Gehlbech expresses no regret for how things turned out.
“I say to this day it is the best thing that ever happened to me, because it was such a wake up call.”
Gehlbech hired a coach and spent the next year dropping 30 pounds and getting into top shape. Waiting for one last shot at the department he truly wanted, he applied to the San Jose Fire Department and aced the academy thanks to his renewed fitness, getting hired in 2018. Reclaiming his career served as a win that generated significant momentum in the years since.

Gehlbech wanted to make a difference beyond firefighting and start helping other men reclaim their bodies and lives. That concept and his T.R.O.P.H.Y. system would evolve into the Trophy Dad business, and he has since helped many dads get in better shape without the struggles that he faced when trying to learn the ropes of nutrition. He also created his own preworkout supplement called Morning Would.
The success of both were what led to him going all in. After 11 total years in the fire service, Gehlbech made the bold decision to resign in April 2026 to focus full-time on his entrepreneurial ventures. The gamble is already paying off.
“It’s been all gas, no brakes ever since.”
Since then, a spontaneous opportunity and partnership with the nonprofit HeroWorks and the “I Believe in You” encouragement campaign will lead Gehlbech to the prestigious Olympia World Fitness Expo in Las Vegas, Nevada on September 25 and 26, where he will likely make many new fitness-minded friends at booth 119 and promote his causes and coaching as well as launch a new flavor of Morning Would.
For the 165-pound skinny kid, being a part of the Olympia Weekend may have been a far-fetched dream at best, but it is now a reality for the husband and father of three, and he wants to use the opportunity to share a positive message while helping dads like him make their dreams a reality as well.
“Envision, dream big. Dream big of what you want for your life and who you are. And be obsessive about it.”
