Competing in the over 105kg class at the International Weightlifting Federation’s World Weightlifting Championships in Houston over the weekend, Russia’s Aleksei Lovchev had a meet to remember. Lovchev broke both the clean and total weight world records to take gold and once again cement Russia’s place as one of the world’s weightlifting powerhouses.
His total weight was comprised of a 264 kg (582.02 pounds) clean and jerk and a 211 kg (465.175 pounds) snatch for a grand total of 475kg (1047.2 pounds). The 26-year-old was stunned by his own effort. “I was thinking ‘This is impossible,’ as I had never tried that weight before,” he said according to the IWF website. “I’m overwhelmed…this shows that Russia is the strongest nation.”
