This week in Las Vegas, the Olympia is doing something it hasn’t done before.

It’s crowning a Fit Model Olympia champion.

And before the old-school bodybuilding crowd starts throwing chicken breasts at the computer, hear me out.

The Olympia has been evolving since Larry Scott won the first one in 1965. It started with men’s bodybuilding. Today we’ve got Open, 212, Classic, Men’s Physique, Bikini, Figure, Wellness, Fitness, Women’s Physique, Women’s Bodybuilding, Wheelchair and now Fit Model.

That’s 12 divisions.

Apparently we finally found every possible way to stand onstage in your skimpies.

Fit Model is interesting because the IFBB Pro League has deliberately moved the target away from greater muscularity and harder conditioning.

The NPC introduced the division at the amateur level in 2025. The IFBB Pro League followed with professional contests in 2026, and now Fit Model arrives at the Olympia for the first time. The 2026 Olympia runs September 24–27 in Las Vegas, and Fit Model is officially part of the Olympia qualification system.

The judging criteria are unusually explicit.

Competitors should have enough muscle to shape the female body, but less muscle than Bikini competitors. The rules specifically call for less development in the legs, glutes, arms and delts. Delts can have a little roundness but shouldn’t be capped. The midsection should be fit but not highly detailed. There should be no visible glute-ham tie-in and no hamstring separation.

Read that again.

A Division Built on ‘Less’ Instead of ‘More’

Sounds oddly familiar—like when they originally announced Bikini. The federation describes the target as the kind of conditioning you’d expect to see on the cover of a mainstream fitness magazine. In fact, its published rules use three-time Bikini Olympia champion Ashley Kaltwasser’s 2015 physique as the visual example of the desired look.

That’s fascinating because it quietly acknowledges something we’ve watched happen to nearly every physique division ever created.

They grow.

Women’s bodybuilding grew. Figure grew. Bikini grew. Men’s Physique grew. Classic Physique was supposed to provide an alternative to the enormous Open guys, and today’s best Classic competitors would have looked like monsters standing next to bodybuilders from several decades ago.

Competitive evolution has a direction. More muscle. Harder condition. Bigger shoulders. Bigger glutes. Smaller waist. Then somebody creates another division underneath it. Fit Model is essentially an attempt to reset the clock—because bikini got out of hand.

The presentation reflects that. There are no bodybuilding mandatory poses. Competitors perform a front pose and a back pose. The suits must be plain-colored rather than covered in the Swarovski artillery we’ve become accustomed to, and competitors wear heels. Presentation, symmetry, balance, conditioning and muscularity all matter.

I can already hear somebody saying, “That’s not bodybuilding.” Just like when Bikini first showed up. But neither is a two-minute gymnastics routine, and Fitness has been part of our world for decades.

The better question is whether Fit Model brings women into physique competition who otherwise wouldn’t compete.

That’s exactly what the division was designed to do. The muscular and conditioning requirements of Bikini have steadily risen, and there’s a substantial population of women who train hard, eat correctly, look fantastic and have absolutely no desire to diet until their glutes have geological features.

Why shouldn’t there be somewhere for them to compete? (There was, it was called Bikini).

Which brings us to the one enormous challenge. The judges have to protect the standard. This time. Because if the winning Fit Model gets a little harder next year, and the next champion gets a little more muscular the year after that, we know exactly where this train goes. We’ll eventually get Fit Model Classic to rescue us from Fit Model.

So I’ll be watching the first Olympia champion for more than who wins. I’ll be watching what wins. Because the judges will be defining an entire division. And every woman who enters this division afterward is going to chase whatever physique they reward. I hope they choose wisely.
