First year pro Ed Nunn is looking for big things to happen at the 2009 IFBB Sacramento Men’s Pro Bodybuilding Grand Prix, November 7 at the Crest Theatre in Sacramento, California. Nunn, the 2008 NPC Nationals super-heavyweight and overall winner, who finished seventh in his pro debut at the Europa Super Show earlier this August, is determined to finish much higher and grab an early qualification for the 2010 Mr. Olympia [top three qualify]. Here’s what he had to say heading into the last IFBB men’s bodybuilding show of the year.

FUEL FOR THE FUTURE
“I was disappointed with seventh [at the Europa] because I had worked so hard, but it’s natural for us [athletes] to feel that way with all the training and dieting we do for the show. It takes a lot of sacrifice to be your best on that one day, then when you don’t do as well as you wanted, well, you feel it. It would have been great to qualify for the Olympia in my rookie year, but you know, after the show I got so much support from friends, family and fans that it just fired me up to do better next time.”

EYES ON ME
“There are only so many things you can control. You can’t do anything about what another guy is doing for a show. You can only do your best and make sure your training and dieting are up to par. Then you try to nail it on the day of the show, confident in the knowledge that you’ve done everything right. After that, it’s out of your hands so I don’t focus on it.”

BIG LEAGUES
“Transitioning from the amateurs to the pro ranks can be overwhelming. The level of competition goes up, big time. In the pros, you see more fullness along with condition. That’s the best combination. You can’t do the same things you did as an amateur. You have to raise your game.”

BIGGER AND BETTER
“I think my conditioning was pretty much on, so I’ll probably bring the same or better. The biggest difference will be more size. I was 250 pounds in Dallas and I plan on being about 5-6 pounds heavier. It’s tough to make substantial gains in such a short period of time, but I worked the heck out of my chest, back and shoulders, hitting them twice a week. I trained legs every eight days to improve the balance between my upper and lower body.”

THE E-Z DIET
“I went off my diet for about two weeks after Dallas so that helped me maintain my sanity. Then I went on a sort of bulking phase, eating lots of red meat to help add size. My actual diet for Sacramento started about 10 weeks out. This diet has been a lot easier because I was already in shape to begin with.”

GO FOR THE “W”
“The goal is to win. That’s always the case. You can’t think of anything less than a win because you won’t give it your all if you’re training and dieting for second, third or fourth. You’ve already defeated yourself. I want the win and a qualifying spot for next year’s Olympia. That’s why I kill myself in the gym and stick to the diet.”

THE FAVORITE
Toney Freeman is obviously the frontrunner. He’s a great competitor who continues to make improvements. I’ve always admired his physique. He’s tall and wide, which is my build. We’re very similar so I’m sure we’ll be compared together. I know he has me on weight and overall size but I’ll be bringing the condition. I look forward to doing battle against him.”

NUNN BETTER
“Me, Toney, Mark Dugdale, Darrem Charles, Craig Richardson and Kris Dim, that’s my prediction for the first callout. Of course, it all depends on who brings it on the day of the show. Someone might step onstage in phenomenal shape and just blow everyone out of the water. I’m hoping to be that guy.”
