New York Knicks fans are rejoicing today as their team secured a stunning victory over the San Antonio Spurs, placing them just one win away from series victory. With a loss all but guaranteed against the Spurs, OG Anunoby made his move right in the Knick of time, scoring the biggest and most exciting comeback in NBA Finals history.
An all-star audience featuring the likes of Taylor Swift, Timothee Chalamet, Adam Sandler, and Kylie Jenner were blown away as London-born baller, Ogugua “OG” Anunoby Jr saved the Knicks from certain defeat. During Game 4 of the NBA Finals held at Madison Square Garden on June 10, the first final that the Knicks have hosted in 27 years, the local team were being trounced by the Spurs, who were leading by 29 points until a crushing comeback kept Knicks fan’s dreams alive.
The tide began to turn in the second half, with Jalen Brunson amassing a total of 36 points, but with just 1.2 seconds of matchplay left, “OG” Anunoby sealed the deal in epic fashion, making a tip-in putback to win 107-106. “That has to be the most iconic shot in the history of New York basketball,” said Knicks coach Mike Brown, discussing Anunoby’s scramble to save Brunson’s initial attempt at the basket. “Right hand from God,” exclaimed Knicks center, Karl-Anthony Towns.
For his part, “OG” Anunoby earned a career high 33 points during the game, but explained that it had been a team effort. “I mean, it’s pretty cool,” said the player in post-match comments. “But that’s what we are, a team, like a brotherhood. We have each other’s backs. That’s just how it goes sometimes, and I mean we would all do the same for each other.”
Winning a finals game after trailing by 29 points was unprecedented until June 10, with the last-second points only adding to the excitement. The comeback was even more nail-biting than Game 4 in 2008, when the Boston Celtics tuned their 24-point deficit around, defeating the Los Angeles Lakers.
To date, the New York Knicks have won just two titles in its 80-year history, but with a 3-1 lead in this best of seven series, hopes are high for another history making victory in Game 5, to be held on Saturday night in San Antonio.
