Making the decision to see a nutritionist might possibly be the one of the best preventative health care steps you can take.  A nutritionist offers much more than just caloric information.  They have an abundance of knowledge on how the body functions, which foods are required for maximum performance and how to avoid or prevent certain health pitfalls such as diabetes, high blood pressure, and obesity, to name a few.  A good nutritionist can teach you how to eat for the long haul to stay within a healthy weight range an avoid gaining weight back once you’ve lost it.Here are six things you should know about seeing a nutritionist and how they can help you live your healthiest life:

They’ll hold you accountable.

A good nutrition coach will require weekly check ins to keep you honest.  Your weight and food logs will be reviewed to make sure you’re staying on track.  Most people have better results when they’re accountable to someone.  This will also be a time when you can ask questions about your daily diet or state concerns, like what you can eat at an upcoming party or food-based event.

They’ll solve your “information overload” problems

The most common questions nutritionists are asked include: “Should I avoid carbs?” “Are fats bad?” and “How do I know what supplements to take?”  A trained nutritionist can explain the answers to those questions and more.  He/she can also see the deficiencies in your diet and recommend the proper supplements.  Venturing into the vitamin store can be very overwhelming when you’re not sure what you’re looking for.  Your nutritionist can provide you with a shopping list so it’s seamless.

They’ll help you manage health issues.

If your doc diagnosed you with a serious health issue, like high blood pressure, high cholesterol, or diabetes, this can leave you feeling confused, overwhelmed, and frustrated.  What foods are helpful and what foods can be detrimental?  An educated nutritionist can help you to decipher these health concerns.  He/she can write you a specific meal plan to help keep these issues at bay or even clear them up and keep you off medication.

Nutritionist Credentials to Look For

The nutrition profession isn’t regulated by most states.  Many people take online certificate courses and then call themselves nutritionists.  Make sure you look for someone with a Bachelors or Masters Degree in Clinical Nutrition.  This will ensure that they’ve studied the proper sciences, anatomy and physiology, biochemistry, biology and the like.  In order to truly have an understanding of the body and all the magnificent things it does every single minute, a nutritionist needs to be versed in those sciences.   Ask your doctor or a trusted health care professional for a recommendation.  Many nutritionists now work in doctor’s offices.  This ensures everyone is on the same page regarding your health.
