Fauja Singh, 101, the oldest marathon runner in the world, has decided that he has run his last 26.2 miler. Singh reportedly ran his first marathon when he was 89, but even his incredible body can no longer take the strain of the race.
“I recognize that the longer distances are becoming challenging and taking part in races adds pressure on me as I like to be seen to be enjoying myself and not struggling,” said Singh recently, according to Metro. “I’m not sad and want to retire at the top. I have achieved all I wanted and there are no more records to be broken.” Singh clocked his best marathon time in 2003, when he completed the Toronto race in five hours and 40 minutes.
Singh recently told AFP why he thinks he has stayed in such good shape over his long life. “The reason for my good health is that I exercise daily and follow a proper diet regime,” said the Indian-born London-based Sikh. “I take happiness in biggest proportions, though my actual diet is very small.”
Singh went on to say he still plans to run four hours a day and want to continue to inspire people. Mr. Singh, we say “More Power to You!”
