Formerly known as la Fête nationale, French National Day pays homage to the Storming of the Bastille—the major turning point of the French Revolution which took place on July 14, 1789.
The day also marks the Fête de la Fédération, which commemorates the unity of the French people (albeit one year after Bastille Day).
