Fabricio Werdum (20-5-1 MMA, 8-2 UFC) beat Cain Velasquez (13-2 MMA, 11-2 UFC) in Mexico City on Saturday night to become the undisputed UFC heavyweight champion. Werdum, who held the interim belt going into this fight, was able to absorb some heavy shots in the first rounds before establishing a rhythm of his own.

Velasquez, who is known for his strong cardio, seemed to feel the effects of the altitude in Mexico City more than Werdum. In the third round, Velasquez went for a takedown, but Werdum anticipated the move and caught Velasquez with a guillotine choke. Velasquez tapped out to the delight of Werdum and the utter shock of the 20,000 plus crowd in attendance.
