The NFL preseason might just be underway, but one member of the NFL community is already in postseason form. Simona Douglas, wife of former Philadelphia Eagles and New York Jets defensive end Hugh Douglas, proved that good genes run in the family when she took home the overall Figure title at the 2006 NPC USA Bodybuilding & Figure Championships on July 28-29 in Last Vegas, Nevada.

Douglas, who started competing seven years ago, notched the win just two weeks after finishing a disappointing third in her class at the Team Universe Championships. Considering Douglas finished as the runner-up in her class at the same show in 2005, she didn’t view the placing as a notable achievement.

“I was mad,” Douglas said. “I said, ‘Okay, I slacked somewhere. I have to pull it together.” She did, and earned her pro card in the process. But the 35-year-old Philly resident was hardly surprised by the result. “I busted my butt since the Team U,” Douglas said. “I did a lot of plyometrics, ran hills, and did sprints every day to tighten up.”

You’d think that Douglas would have had at least one member of the family — the one three-time Pro-Bowler with 13 years of prepping for the NFL preseason — to keep her company when it came time to run those hills. You’d think that, but you’d be wrong. When it came time to run those hills, her Pro-Bowl husband was content to watch from the sidelines. “I was like, ‘Come run the hills with me.’” Douglas said. “And he said, ‘No. Only one athlete at a time. You can be the athlete now.’”
